Our Story

Fox & Obel Market, Café and Catering opened its doors on August 30, 2001. The idea of creating Chicago's first world-class food market became a reality behind the combined vision of Ken Obel, Ari Fox and Gary and Meme Hopmayer. Together, with many talented food professionals and investors who shared their vision, the beginning of a great Chicago destination was built.

Today, Fox & Obel is owned by many private investors, who appreciate the wonders of a great market in Chicago. In just over four years with a single location, our company has become known around the globe for its passion, selection, presentation and celebration of great food.

Our vision is to share our passion for excellence in food and service. We want to bring you the finest food and service Chicago and the world has to offer. Our food choices are staggering. Locally grown organic produce, prime beef dry-aged on premise, freshly baked artisan bread and pastries, seafood flown to Chicago the day it is caught, a collection of the finest cheeses, a list of boutique wines and a gourmet-to-go section that rivals the cooking of any fine dining restaurant are the hallmarks of Fox & Obel.

Our passion reaches beyond the market. The café serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and as a neighborhood gathering place. Our menu has many classic dishes, yet keeps up with the best the season has to offer. Fox & Obel Catering caters events for 2 to 2,000.
